These are young girls, after all, exploited- yes, and how these two main characters deal with it, is very different. That works as both an ignition and a deflector, as their young rise to success hits Sherry hard. The colours and camera work feel like you’re in the whirlwind alongside these girls a drug and sex-fueled ride through success. She wrote the screenplay, based on Cherie Currie’s book, and it’s got the look of a long night of party and glitz, as well as the exhausted morning after when things aren’t as bright and the world’s weight is suddenly felt.

Every scene is filmed like an artsy video or photo, and she’s not concerned with how they connect with one another. Writer-director Floria Sigismondi is a photographer and music video director, and it shows. We’re never shown much context, and we’re shown absolutely no small moments of humanity or insight (it doesn’t help that for all their influence Joan Jett and Cherie Currie are, to be fair, minor rock stars, with clich�d journeys and only three good songs in their catalogue). They both start off completely unable to sing or play music then halfway through the film they’re suddenly amazing at both. Cherie is a slapper – we get the obligatory absent dad to motivate it, but that’s it. Joan is tough and angry and rock ‘n’ roll makes her less angry. The filmmakers never try to make these characters interesting people they assume that because they’re Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, they’re interesting in themselves. The action on screen in the Runaways isn’t interesting even with the famous names. The litmus test for a biopic is whether the action on screen would be interesting even if the people portrayed weren’t famous. It sounds like the film should be great fun – but it isn’t, because it never actually tries to tell you a story.
